Put yourself inside a giant bubble with this engaging exhibit and learn all about fluid surface tension. In Bubble Booth, guests step onto a pad and pull a rope to raise a metal ring floating in soapy water. Since soap weakens the surface tension that binds water molecules, the rising ring pulls the water surface into a thin soapy film that forms a massive bubble around the user. When guests blow on the sides, the bubble’s surface tension breaks, pushing out a piece of soapy film into the air. Thanks to the pull of surface tension, this piece of film shrinks into the smallest possible shape around its pocket of air, creating a tiny spherical bubble that floats out to friends.
